Hi, I’m Damian – the wedding photorgapher behind Curator. I’m currently rebuilding my website from the ground up.

I’d love to photograph your wedding, and I’m sorry you’ve come looking at this time. Over the last four years I’ve captured so many weddings and learnt so much, I felt it was time to update my portfolio a bit.

I approach weddings with an artistic but honest eye. I want to tell your story, but in an elevated way.

I’m based in Cape Town but shoot weddings all over South Africa (and further, if you’d like). I use a mixture of digital and 35mm film photography to create timeless imagery you can return to over and over and over. I’m also registered on SA Weddings and you can find my profile in their directory listings.

Some frequently asked questions

At the heart of my photography style is a desire to approach weddings like a curator. I work to be a trusted friend and helper who guides you into creating beautiful moments on your wedding day. Together, we create from that! It’s real, it’s raw and it’s beautiful.

More practically, I believe in the “elevated candid” wedding photograhy style. Imagine a wedding gallery with editorial vogue-like images mixed with documentary honesty. This approach does not rely on fabricated moments but on real connection. Sometimes this is spontanous and I shoot as an observer, other times I will respectfully guide you so that you can look your best and feel confident. Ultimately I’m invested in giving you images that authentically reflect your wedding day, but also make you feel beautiful.

I edit images with natural colours and with a film-inspired texture. I’m particually obsessed with the poetic use of light and think a good black and white is unrivalled.

At a more experiential level, my previous wedding couples consistently describe me as a non-anxious presence on their wedding day. I believe this is important and work with you to make sure you are present and relaxed on your big day so that you can take it all in.

My most requested wedding photography package is R22 000 and includes up to 8 hours of coverage, 400+ images, digital and film photogaphy, an additional shoot, some prints and a pre-wedding creative meeting (over coffee).

I have several package options but much prefer building personal packages that suit each unique wedding couple. I have a list of recommended vendors, personal relationships with videographers and film-only luminary photogaphers, an online print shop for easy tangible memories and so much more we can work with! Nothing is off the table and I honestly love getting to pour myself into each wedding. No! I just live in Cape Town and do most of my work here. But I love travelling for weddings and I’m more than happy to capture weddings wherever you might want.

I dream of shooting more weddings in the Karoo and Midlands, and even futher in places like Italy, Greece and Spain.

Film photography is a forgotten artform, being revived as a luxury trend. It involves capturing images using antique cameras, on old film-strips your grandparents used to use. To this day, digital photographers are still trying to crack the code on getting film-like images — they truly are unique and incredible. Steven Spielberg is famous for calling it a chemical miracle. Film somehow manages to capture texture and colour in way’s that outshine digital.

I’m lucky enough to have accesss to working 35mm and 120mm film cameras. There aren’t many wedding photographers in the world who still access to this and I consider it a blessing. I favour Kodak film stock for it’s colour and grain structure. For black and white I use Tri-x.

I also have a relationship with a full-time, film-only wedding photogapher who exclusively partners with me to capture weddings. I highly recommend this approach because of the balance and artistry it brings to the full gallery. If this sounds interesting to you, please reach out and let me know.

My name is Damian Van Der Walt. I’ve been a wedding photogapher for four years but I love all things art.

I used to work as a pastor, specializing in creative communcation, spiritual formation and social justice. I resigned from this job to pursue more wedding photography but this work remains close to my heart.

Beyond that I love slow living, travel, coffee and wine as well as any kind of adventure. I’m an enneagram nine and love talking with people.

I live in Cape Town, South Africa but dream of working in Italy for a while.
